May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Tips for Teachers to Recharge and Thrive This Spring
As the school year winds down and the spring semester hits its full stride, educators often find themselves stretched thin - balancing lesson planning, grading, testing, and classroom energy levels that are off the charts. While teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, it's no secret that it can also be incredibly demanding - mentally, emotionally, and physically.
That’s why Mental Health Awareness Month is the perfect time to hit pause, reflect, and focus on you.
There are some positive, practical tips to help teachers and educators protect, maintain, and refresh their mental state as they power through the spring semester.
1. Start and End the Day with Intention
The first and last few minutes of your day set the tone. Start with a short mindfulness activity - like deep breathing, a gratitude list, or even a walk in silence with your coffee. At the end of the day, give yourself 5-10 minutes to reflect on what went well, then intentionally disconnect from work.
Try This: Use an app like Calm or Insight Timer for quick 5-minute guided meditations designed for busy schedules.
2. Protect Your Planning Period
We know it’s tempting to fill every spare second with grading or meetings, but your planning time is also your reset time. Use a portion of it to step outside, stretch, or listen to a calming playlist - anything that gives your brain a break.
Pro Tip: Keep a “Recharge Playlist” ready for a quick energy boost or moment of calm.
3. Set Healthy Boundaries
It’s okay to say “no” to additional responsibilities when your plate is full. Setting boundaries isn't selfish - it's essential. Protect your evenings and weekends where possible, and don’t be afraid to communicate when you need time to recharge.
Reminder: Saying “no” to one thing means saying “yes” to your well-being.
4. Move Your Body - Even in Small Ways
Physical movement releases endorphins, reduces stress, and helps sharpen focus. Whether it’s a brisk hallway walk, some desk stretches, or after-school yoga, find what works for you and make it a habit.
Quick Win: Do a 3-minute “teacher stretch session” between periods to reset your posture and energy.
5. Create a “Happy Folder”
Collect notes, drawings, or kind emails from students and parents throughout the year and keep them in a folder (physical or digital). On tough days, revisit these messages as a reminder of your impact.
Fuel for the Soul: A single note can reignite your passion and purpose.
6. Lean Into Your Support System
You’re not alone. Talk to colleagues, share laughs in the staff lounge, or create a support group where you can decompress together. If you need deeper support, don’t hesitate to reach out to a counselor or mental health professional.
Connection is key - even a quick chat with a fellow teacher can lighten the load.
7. Celebrate Small Wins
Spring semester is full of milestones, both big and small. Celebrate them! Did a student finally grasp a tough concept? Did you make it through a long week? Recognize it, reward yourself, and keep moving forward.
Tip: Make a classroom “Wins Wall” and celebrate victories with your students too!
In Closing…
Mental health is health. As you pour your heart into your students, remember that your well-being matters just as much. This May, and every month, give yourself the grace to pause, breathe, and care for your own mind and heart.
From all of us at AVer, thank you for everything you do. Here's to finishing strong - and feeling strong, too.
